- *** RUNNING THE PATCH ***
- =========================
-
- To install the KKND patch, run the executable file PATCH.EXE. This file
- will re-install KKND and then copy across the updated files. You cannot
- upgrade to version 1.2 without re-installing KKND.
-
- This patch features an upgraded version of UniVBE. Please consult the
- VIDEO.TXT file to make sure that your card is supported by KKND.
- If your card doesn't appear in the VIDEO.TXT list, contact your vendor for
- Vesa 2.0 drivers or contact Scitech Software for an updated version of
- UVCONFIG.EXE.
-
- Scitech Softwares home page is at:
-
- http://www.scitechsoft.com/
-
- This version of the patch will only work on English language versions of
- KKND. If your version of KKND is in a different language, you will have
- to download the patch for that language version.
-
-
-
- *** KKND VERSION 1.2 FEATURES ***
- =================================
-
- MULTIPLAYER MESSAGE MODE
- ------------------------
- To send a message to all the other players in the game press Ctrl-M in a
- multiplayer game and type in your message. Enter will send it. ESC will
- cancel your message. This works in the game not in the superstructure.
-
-
- LONG TELEPHONE NUMBERS
- ----------------------
- KKND version 1.2 now supports telephone numbers up to 13 digits long.
-
-
- GROUP RECALL FEATURES
- ---------------------
- When recalling a stored group, pressing [ALT]+# will centre the screen
- on the group.
-
-
-
- *** MENU SCREENS ***
- ====================
-
- SAVE GAME
- ---------
- Someone (like me) forgot to put the Save Game info in the manual. So here
- it is. During a game, click on the 'Options' button from the main toolbar.
- From this new menu, click 'Save Game', then scroll up and down the list of
- numbers (using the on-screen arrows) until you reach the save game slot you
- wish to use. Double-click on that slot position or click the 'Save Game'
- button, then type in a name for this slot. Hit ENTER, and the game is
- saved. Click 'Return To Game' to get back to the action.
-
-
- ADDITIONAL KEYBOARD NAVIGATION
- ------------------------------
- If you don't want to use your mouse, the arrow keys on your Number Pad will
- move you through options, just like Tab and Shift-Tab. SPACE is the same as
- ENTER. Only longer and skinnier, and more likely to be worn out through
- over-use of video games.
-
-
-
- *** IN-GAME ***
- ===============
-
- VETERAN UNITS
- -------------
- Veteran status is only awarded when units administer substantial damage to
- other combat units. Shooting buildings gives nothing more than immense
- satisfaction.
-
-
- REPAIR BAY/MENAGERIE & TECH UPGRADES
- ------------------------------------
- You can upgrade you Repair Bay/Menagerie, using the same method as for
- other buildings up to the current global Tech Level (see under Tech Levels
- in the manual --I actually remembered to put that one in). An upgraded
- Repair Bay/Menagerie makes for faster and cheaper repairs on vehicles
- and/or animals.
-
-
- FORCED ATTACK
- -------------
- Forced attack allows you to attack one of your own units or an allied unit.
- To make a selected unit conduct a forced attack hold the cursor over one of
- your own units or buildings and then press ALT. The Attack cursor (the red
- spinny thingee) will now appear. Click to attack your (or ex-buddies if it
- was an allied unit) building, unit or defence tower.
-
-
-
- *** MULTIPLAYER ***
- ===================
-
- NUMBER OF PLAYERS
- -----------------
- Each KKND CD supports two players. You got 2 players? You need at least
- one CD. You got 3 or 4 players? You need at least 2 CDs. You get the
- picture. And whoever wants to play has to install KKND on their machine
- (minimum or maximum install -- it don't matter), whether they're gonna use
- a CD or not. So there.
-
- Not only that, but only players with a CD can be the Server. Everyone else
- can only join a multiplayer game, so long as there are enough CDs active to
- support everyone. Makes you just wanna go out and buy your own copy,
- doesn't it?
-
-
- ALLIANCES
- ---------
- One point was omitted from the manual's "Breaking Alliances" section: to
- break an alliance, you must FORCE an attack on your ally. This means
- selecting at least one of your own units, holding down ALT, and clicking
- on an allied unit. When you do that, the alliance is broken and your
- friend is crappy with you. Blowing your friendship could be just a button
- away!
-
- Note that Airstrikes won't break alliances (the thinner air makes them
- stoopid) and Vandals and Saboteurs won't break an alliance (because they're
- INSANE!). Note also that a hippy got loose in here and allowed alliances
- between two players in a two player game. Damn peace-loving FREAK!
-
-
- MULTIPLAYER HELP CURSOR
- -----------------------
- In multiplayer games you can find out who owns what by moving the help
- cursor (the question mark) over any unit or building. Then you should read
- what is displayed.
-
-
- MULTIPLAYER TECH BUNKERS
- ------------------------
- Tech Bunkers work slightly differently in Multiplayer. They take between
- 10 and 20 minutes to become active. Once active they operate identically
- to the single player game. Okay, so this stretches reality a little, but
- it's a game, dang-nab it!
-
-
- MODEM PERFORMANCE
- -----------------
- Modem performance can often be increased by switching the music level to
- zero. To do this, go into your in-game options menu (the 'O' button),
- click on the OPTIONS button (for further options) and drag the MUSIC slider
- all the way to the left.
-
-
- MODEM PLAY DIFFICULTIES
- -----------------------
- If you're having problems connecting to play a modem game of KKND, it may
- be that your modem doesn't support a standard initialisation string. You
- can change this string and other modem settings to suit your modem by
- editing the file 'SERIAL.CFG' in your installed KKND directory.
-
-
- SERIAL PLAY UNDER WIN '95
- -------------------------
- When running a serial game under Win '95, you must make sure that the
- serial ports on both machines are set to the same baud rate. To check the
- baud rate for your serial port, look in System Settings\Device Manager and
- then call up the properties for your serial port. The tab Port Settings
- should show you the baud rate of your port. We recommend a baud rate of
- 9600, but you should experiment to find the best rate for your system.
-
-
- MULTIPLAYER GAME WARNING
- ------------------------
- When playing a multiplayer game of KKND, the game will be over for all
- players if the server machine quits or if any of the players switch off
- their machine without quitting the game first.
-
-
-
- *** WINDOWS 95 USERS ***
- ========================
-
- WINDOWS 95 NOTES
- ----------------
- To avoid erratic and crazy things, Win95 users should launch KKND from the
- 'Shortcut to KKND' icon that appears in the KKND directory after you've
- installed the game.
-
- IMPORTANT! Don't do any 'Task Switching' under Win95 while KKND is
- running. Actually, you should probably close down all other applications
- before you run the game. This should prevent weird things from happening,
- most of which you probably wouldn't like.
-
-
- MULTIPLAYER GAMES
- -----------------
- Multiplayer games of KKND can only be played between all Win '95 machines
- or all DOS machines, you can't mix Win '95 with DOS machines in the same
- game.
-
-
- KKND SHORTCUT
- -------------
- When you create a shortcut for KKND on your desktop, you must set the
- working directory in the properties to the directory where KKND is installed.
-
-
-
- *** MISCELLANEOUS ***
- ======================
-
- UNINSTALLER BATCH FILE
- ----------------------
- You wanna kill KKND off your system all together? Well, it's a good thing
- the program comes equipped with a self-destruct mechanism. To get rid of
- the game from your system, move the file 'KILLKKND.BAT' to the root
- directory of your C drive, then run this program from an MS-DOS prompt or
- from the Task Bar. And before you can say "Yes, I'm sure I want to break
- the hearts of all the people who worked on this game", KKND will be
- completely removed from your sys..........
-
-
- UniVBE SUPPORT
- --------------
- The file VIDEO.TXT lists all of the video cards that KKND is compatible with.
- If your card doesn't appear on this list and KKND doesn't work properly, you
- will have to contact the manufacturer of the card to get Vesa 2.0 drivers
- for the card.
-
- If your card is listed and you are having problems playing KKND, then you
- should try the following things:
-
- 1. Install and run KKND is a full DOS session, not Windows '95. KKND is a
- DOS application. You will need sound and CD drivers to play KKND in a
- DOS session.
-
- 2. Contact the manufacturer of your card for updated VESA 2.0 drivers.
